Are you looking for an SUV with towing capabilities? If so, one model you’ll want to consider is the 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe. This is one of the more popular SUV models currently available, and for good reason. The Tahoe combines elegance with power, giving you not only a comfortable ride but the ability to bring a lot along with you.

That being said, everyone has different towing needs, and the 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe can’t tow everything. However, it does have some limits, which you’ll want to know before you purchase it. In this guide, we’ll detail the towing capacity of the Chevrolet Tahoe and outline a few other reasons why you should consider this vehicle for your next purchase. We hope that you’ll know whether or not this SUV is the best option for your needs by the end of this guide.

THE TOWING CAPACITY OF THE 2021 CHEVROLET TAHOE

Let’s start off by listing the raw numbers. The 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe comes in several different trim options, and you can also choose from a few different engines and drivetrain systems. So naturally, the options you choose impact the total amount you’re able to tow.

For example, there are four trims that come with one engine, the LS, LT, RST, Premier, and Z71 trims, and within each of these, you get the 5.2L V8 engine. If you go with one of these trims, you’ll get a maximum towing capacity of 8,400 lbs.

The other trim option is the High Country, and this trim comes with a  6.2L V8 engine. With this trim, you’ll get a maximum capacity of 8,300 lbs, however, while the trailer capacity is a little less, the 6.2L engine provides more horsepower and torque. Therefore, you need to decide whether you’d prefer to have a slightly larger towing capacity or a more powerful engine.

WHAT CAN YOU TOW WITH THE 2021 CHEVROLET TAHOE?

Knowing the exact amount of weight your Chevy Tahoe can tow is important. If you don’t know the weight of your trailer or what’s in it, this doesn’t do you much good. So what does towing 8,300 lbs actually look like? To help you out, here are some common weights for empty trailers:

  • Small fishing boat trailer: 600 lbs
  • Car trailer: 1900 lbs
  • Large travel trailer: 6700 lbs

Of course, this is only an estimate, so you’ll want to look up the weight of your particular trailer for a better idea. In addition, this doesn’t actually account for anything you store in the trailer. For example, if you’re towing a motorcycle in a trailer, you’d need to add up the weight of your trailer plus the weight of your motorcycle. A few average weights that may assist you include:

  • A motorcycle: 300-500 lbs
  • Canoe: 30-40 lbs
  • Small fishing boat: 2000-5000 lbs
  • Camper: 3000-6000 lbs

A good idea is to have your trailer and its contents weighed, if possible. Many places offer this service, such as truck stops along the highway. Of course, getting your trailer there requires towing it, and you may not have that capability at the moment. If you’re unable to get to a weighing station, you may also find the information in your owner’s manual. However, you do it, be sure you have a good idea as to how much you’ll need to tow so that you can get the right truck for your needs.

OTHER REASONS TO GET THE CHEVY TAHOE

While having the ability to tow is great, it’s likely not your only concern when looking for a new vehicle. Luckily, this SUV has plenty else to offer. As we mentioned above, the Chevrolet Tahoe has a powerful engine that provides 355 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque. For an SUV, this is typically more than enough power for the average user, and in addition to that, you have the option of either 2WD or 4WD.

Another important performance metric is fuel efficiency. With the Tahoe, you can expect to get around 15 MPG in the city and 20 MPG on the highway, for a combined 17 MPG. Again, this is fairly good for an SUV of this size and power.

For the times you’re not trailering, you’ll want plenty of cargo space. The 2021 model comes with 25.5 cubic feet of cargo space when all the seats are in use. If you fold the third row of seats down, you can expand that to 72.6 cubic feet. For even more space, you can fold down the second row of seats and expand the cargo area up to 122.9 cubic feet. This should be more than enough room for whatever you need to throw inside the Tahoe.

Finally, the 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe offers a comfortable ride. This comes not only from its spacious interior but from the included technology features. For example, the Tahoe comes with a large 10.2” infotainment touchscreen through which you can connect your Android or Apple device and play your favorite music or use your favorite navigation apps. In addition, there’s a Bose 9-speaker system for excellent sound quality. The seats are also comfortable to sit in for long periods, with perforated leather upholstery, plenty of seat adjusters, and the option to get heated seats for those colder mornings.
