Engine and Performance
With five engines in the Silverado 1500's lineup for 2022, one of the toughest decisions you'll face when buying this truck is which one to put under the hood. The answer largely depends on what you plan on using your truck for. The base 4.3-liter V-6 engine, which generates 285 horsepower, or the 2.7-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with 310 horsepower are great options if you'll usually be driving your truck around town, or performing light towing or hauling jobs.
If you're intending to push your Silverado's towing capacity to the limit, you'll want to look at the 1500's two V-8 engine options, or its turbodiesel six-cylinder offering. The first V-8 is a 5.3-liter engine capable of cranking out 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque. The second is a 6.2-liter V-8 with 420 horsepower and 469 pound-feet of torque. This is the right choice for you if you want to take advantage of the Silverado's maximum 13,300-pound towing capability.
The six-cylinder turbodiesel can haul well over 9,000 pounds and has the added benefit of being more fuel-efficient. The 3.0-liter engine puts out 277 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque.
Depending on the engine you choose and the trim level you go for, your Silverado can be powered with a six-, eight-, or nine-speed automatic transmission. Rear-wheel drive comes standard, but you can upgrade to a four-wheel drive if desired.
Driver Assistance and Technology
The Silverado 1500 comes standard with the Teen Driver system, which allows you to limit how your truck is used so that a younger driver can learn safely. If you want to take advantage of other assistance features, you can upgrade to adaptive cruise control, which which will keep your truck a set distance away from the vehicles in front of you on the highway, and forward collision warning, which alerts you if an obstacle is looming up ahead. Other optional assistance features are front pedestrian braking, automatic emergency braking, lane keep assist, and lane departure warning.
Chevy's surround-view parking system may come in handy if you do a lot of city driving and need to maneuver your truck into tight parking spots. The clear view from all angles that this system gives you will help you feel more confident, whether you're parking or trying to get out of a tight space.
Cabs and Cargo Beds
The Silverado's versatility as a family-friendly vehicle or a brawny work truck is clear when you look at the variety of cab and bed options on offer. There are three cab options to choose from: Regular, Double, and Crew cab. Likewise, you can pick from three cargo bed lengths: one measuring 8 feet 2 inches, another measuring 6 feet 7 inches, and a third measuring 5 feet 10 inches.
The regular cab is an excellent choice if you're planning on using your Chevy as a working truck. It features one row of seating for three people. The extra space you'll have at the rear allows you to select the longest cargo bed, which isn't available with the two larger cabs.
The Double cab adds a rear row of seating, which is fine for adult passengers on short journeys or for kids. The back doors have rear hinges, meaning you have to open the front doors first in order to get in or out. Rear-seat passengers get about 35 inches of legroom in the Double cab. If you regularly have passengers in the back, the Crew cab is your best option. It gets full-sized rear doors and boosts legroom of over 43 inches. Whether you choose the Double or Crew cab, you can opt for the short or standard cargo bed.
