As the weather starts to cool down during the late summer and early fall, you and your family may be looking for opportunities to explore the state of Maryland and all it has to offer. Below, you can check out some upcoming family-friendly events that you can mark on the family calendar.

TAKE YOUR PUP TO TAILS ON THE RAILS

When you’re talking about attendees to a family-friendly event, you can’t forget any four-legged children in your crew. The B&O Railroad Museum hosts its annual Tails on the Rails event in late October. At this event, every canine, including senior dogs and young pups, is welcome to explore and play.

One of the most anticipated attractions is the photo booth. You can capture photos to remember the day forever, as long as you don’t mind if your dog upstages you. There are plenty of amusing props to use that will make the resulting photos even more fun-filled and memorable. Once your family and pup are done posing, you can hop on a train ride that allows all pups aboard. The train ride leads to Carroll Park where all the furry participants can partake in a playdate.

This event concludes with the colloquially named “Yappy Hour.” At this point, all attendees can socialize on the B&O Railroad Museum’s spacious outdoor patio and enjoy the free alcoholic beverage that comes with each ticket.

If you plan to attend Tails on the Rails this year, be sure to dress yourself, your kids, and your pup in your best Halloween attire. Dressing up with your family will get you into the spirit of the occasion, and you can even enter your pup in the costume contest for a chance at winning a prize.

ENJOY LIVE MUSIC AT SUNFEST

Sunfest is a highly anticipated music festival in Ocean City, Maryland. For 2022, the event is set to start on Oct. 20. No worries if you and your family can’t make it out there that day, however, as Sunfest goes until Oct. 23. It’s a 10-hour long event on the first three days and an eight-hour event on the last day, so you’ll have plenty of time to explore everything it has to offer. Sunfest will occur all four days whether there’s rain or shine, so you don’t have to worry about inclement weather cutting your family’s fun short.

All the festival activities take place on the south end of the city’s famous boardwalk. You’ll find several stands that allow young children to partake in arts and crafts. They’ll have a blast making their creations, and they’ll be able to take a piece of the event home with them. Other activities you’ll want to check out include the hayrides and various food vendors.

Sunfest is also known for its provision of musical entertainment. Although Sunfest hasn’t announced its 2022 acts yet, it’s had engaging headlining performers in the past. Some previous performers have included the likes of The Eli Young Band and The Fabulous Hubcaps. This year, we can expect similar high-quality acts to take the stage at Sunfest.

GATHER WITH THE FREDERICK COMMUNITY AT IN THE STREETS

In The Streets is an annual event in Frederick that’s been a tradition for community members for 30 years. What started as a humble event of around 10,000 people in 1983 has since grown to include more than 75,000 attendees each year. During In The Streets, people from all over Maryland gather to celebrate the history of the Frederick community.

The event begins with a one-mile road race on Market Street. It doesn’t matter if you’re a seasoned runner or more of a couch potato, as everyone can participate to get some exercise in before the rest of the event continues. There’s a special “Family Run” category to sign up for, so be sure to look out for that when you’re registering.

After you’ve broken a sweat, the real fun begins. Your family can explore all of the event’s themed blocks that run from All Saints Street to 7th Street. This year, the different themed blocks include the Sports Block, the Art Block, the History Block, and the Health & Wellness Block. We’re particularly excited for the Artisan Block, which will feature various products, like soap, jewelry, and artwork, created by local artisans. There are also a few educational blocks, like the Going Green Block, that can teach kids and families how to be better community members.

GO BACK IN TIME AT THE MARYLAND RENAISSANCE FESTIVAL

The Maryland Renaissance Festival is a great family-friendly event where you can embrace your inner child while spending the day with your loved ones. Before you go, be sure to put on your most historic clothing, including puffy long-sleeved shirts, Robin Hood hats, and corsets, to really get into the spirit.

For the 2022 Maryland Renaissance Festival, you can start preparing early because tickets go on sale on Aug.1. You can purchase tickets in advance for any of the nine planned weekends. The first weekend is Aug. 27-28, and the event continues to run on weekends all through September and October.

You’ll find an abundance of activities to participate in at the Maryland Renaissance Festival, so you and your crew may want to buy tickets for multiple weekends. Some planned activities include archery demonstrations, improv comedy shows, and puppet shows. You can browse the festival’s website for specific activities that align with your family’s interests.
